Interview with Coach Mike Hanie

Question: What advice would you give to young players entering high school who want to play soccer for their high school
team?

To play at the highest competitive level of club soccer they can. Many times that is the level of play that your high school plays.

Question: What training would you recommend for a high school player who is dedicated to improving him or her self in the off
season?

To get themselves in the best possible condition they can be and to play often.

Question: What advice can you give to those athletes who are not as talented as the top players in the state, but want to get
better and compete on the high school level?

You need to watch your local high school play and see what there level of play is. This will give you an idea of what you need to work on.

Question: What special skills do you think a successful coach must possess to lead his or her team during the season?

Organizing, planning, assessing, correcting and implementing training that will improve individual and team performance and being realistic
about objectives for the team.

Question: How has being a teacher helped you become a better coach?

It has helped in setting objectives and planning ways to achieve those objectives.

Question: Do you have any players that graduated that are playing College Soccer? If so, who are they and where are they
playing?

Wes Kent , Riley Phelps at Coastal Carolina and Brandon McMillan -Coast Guard Academy.

Question: What advice would you give to student athletes who are struggling academically in school?

Your first priority is school. If you are having trouble in a subject, seek out your teacher for help, as long as you are putting forth the effort
required, they will be glad to help you.

Question: To whom or what do you attribute your ability to be a successful high school coach?

To Bob Warming and David Chadwick. They instilled in me a love for the game and a passion to give something back to the game.

What do you love about the game of soccer?

It is a free flowing game with very little stoppages of play.

What do you love about coaching high school soccer?

That I get to work with some of the top players in the state and we get to represent something bigger than ourselves.

Who taught you the game of soccer?

I learned to play the game in the projects in East Point ,Ga. There were players of all nationalities and they took the time to teach us the game
twice a week.
